Balancing the base tone first
Some lips have a naturally cool, grey or deeply pigmented base tone. Put a warm colour over the top of that and it does not read the way you expect. It shifts, it goes muddy, or it simply disappears.
Neutralisation solves that first. A layer of warm pigment balances out the underlying tone so that anything applied afterwards sits brighter, truer and more evenly.
£300 · around 3 hours · perfecting session at 4 to 6 weeks included
The number of sessions needed varies from person to person and is planned with you at your consultation.
Who this is for
- Your lips are naturally darker or more pigmented than you would like
- Your lip tone is cool, grey or uneven
- You have tried lip products that never seem to show up properly
- You have been told, or suspect, that lip blush alone would not give you the colour you want
- You feel self conscious about your natural lip colour
How it fits with lip blush
Neutralisation is the groundwork. Lip blush is the colour. For some clients, neutralisation on its own is enough.
The number of sessions needed varies from person to person, so we plan it together at your consultation, and each session is £300. If you are considering lip blush and your natural lip tone is cool or dark, this is usually the sensible first step.
What happens on the day
- Consultation and colour assessment. We look closely at your natural base tone and I select a corrective pigment to counteract it, rather than one that sits on top.
- Shape approval. You approve the plan before anything starts.
- Treatment. Pigment is implanted gently with a digital machine. Numbing products are used throughout.
- Aftercare. You leave with a recommended aftercare product and written instructions, also on the Care page.
The colour assessment takes longer here than for a straightforward lip blush. It is the part of the appointment that determines everything else.
Healing
The same pattern as lip blush. Bright and intense at first, softening and lightening over the following weeks, with dryness and flaking along the way.
Be a little more patient with this one than you would be with lip blush. Neutralisation is doing corrective work underneath, and the honest verdict is only available once it has fully healed.
Perfecting session
Included, four to six weeks later, once healing is complete.
Longevity
Typically two to three years, the same as lip blush, depending on lifestyle, skin type, sun exposure and how your skin holds pigment.
Before your appointment
Preparation is the same as lip blush. Full instructions are on the Care page. The short version:
- Keep your lips well hydrated in the weeks beforehand. This makes a real difference to the result
- Gently exfoliate any dry skin a few days before
- No alcohol or caffeine for 24 hours beforehand
- No aspirin or ibuprofen for 24 to 72 hours beforehand, unless prescribed
- If you get cold sores, speak to your GP or pharmacist about antiviral medication beforehand, as treatment can trigger an outbreak
- Avoid sunburn to the lips
- Arrive with healthy, unbroken skin on and around the lips
“Had my lips neutralised with Bea on Tuesday. I have naturally dark and pigmented lips which I've always been self conscious of. It's only been a few days but I absolutely love them.”
